The Roma, the people called "gypsies" have been known for centuries as master entertainers, mixing their own cultural traditions with those of the countries in which they settled. Paying homage to this rich heritage, a quartet of gypsy girls, takes you on a delightful trip along the northern shores of the Mediterranean, visiting three countries with a rich legacy of music, dance and storytelling. Journey to Greece, where a clever girl named Aliki fearlessly rids her village of a diabolical Ogress. From Spain, The Three Princesses of the Alhambra, based upon the legend as told by Washington Irving in his book Alhambra, is a poignant tale of three identical sisters, imprisoned in the Alhambra by their superstitious father. Finally in Bastianelo, a young bridegroom from Italy finds the world full of fools, each one more foolish than the next. This story-theater presentation also features lively folk dances, including Italy's tarantella, quadriglia, and furlana, and Greece's hasapiko and kalamatiano, and is underscored by engaging folk music of each of the countries. |
